BOILERS’ KEVIN COLEMAN MEMORIAL  SCHOLARSHIP:

kevin

When we first decided to start an annual Boilers Golf Outing, we said that it would be used to go that little extra that would separate us from other franchises. We wanted a way to show our players how much their time & hard work were appreciated. Our goal was to be able to place them in a hotel for the weekend, if we made it to the World Series, just like all the other competing teams. We also wanted our players to have an opportunity to earn money for college. The first goal was a little easier to achieve. And now, we have begun to make the second goal a reality as well. Each year, we will issue a scholarship to a former Boiler who is graduating high school, has displayed excellence in the classroom & his community, and is attending college to continue his baseball career. We have had so many great people pass through this organization; it will be satisfying to be able to recognize a few of them.

One thing that has been truly special about this team is the people we have met over the years. They have basically become like family… (our summer family, if you will) and one that continues to get bigger. This team has always been about more than just building better baseball players. It has also been about building better young men, building great friendships, and building relationships that last well beyond two years.

One such man who embodied those ideas to the fullest was R. Kevin Coleman. Kevin was the father of Bradley Coleman, a Boiler for the 2009-2010 seasons. Kevin was very proactive in beginning, organizing and planning our annual Golf Outing. However, in the spring of 2011, Kevin unexpectedly passed away. His untimely passing was a tragic loss to all those who ever had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Coleman. Kevin was a larger-than-life person who loved the game of baseball. You could hear his laugh and the party begin as soon as he arrived at the ballpark. He was an absolute joy to be around, a true friend, a loving family man, and a person who would do anything for anyone. It is so important and so appropriate that a gift meant to reward a young person’s accomplishments and help a young ball player as he continues his baseball career, be named after a man like Mr. Coleman. It is with great pride that we will name this award The Kevin Coleman Memorial Scholarship.
